Geboren 1960 in Bonn und Gymnasialzeit mit Abitur 1979 in Siegburg, nach 15 Monaten Wehrdienst im Stabsmusikkorps der Bundeswehr Studium der Humanmedizin von 1980 bis 1986 in Bonn und London. 1980 – 1983 Studium Musikwissenschaft. 1987 Promotion.
Von 1987 bis 1988 Assistent an der Universitätsklinik Essen (Klinik für Thorax- und Kardiovaskuläre Chirurgie, Prof. Dr. C. Reidemeister), von 1988 bis 1990 Assistent an der Chirurgischen Universitätsklinik Köln (Prof. Dr. Dr. H. Pichlmaier), Von 1990 bis 1991 Assistent am Physiologischen Institut I der Universität Bonn (Prof. Dr. W. Jelkmann, Prof. Dr. Grote) mit Forschung zur Sauerstoff-abhängigen Erythropoietin-Bildung.
